125th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sterling Silver Dollar Coin (1998)
Country: Canada, Mint: Royal Canadian Mint, Dimension: 36.07 mm, Coin Weight: 25.175g, Purity: 92.5% Ag Fine Silver, 7.5% Cu Copper
In 1873, the establishment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police marked a pivotal moment in Canadian history, as it aimed to instill law, order, and Canadian authority in the vast Western frontier. This silver dollar serves as a commemoration of the organization's 125th anniversary.
Originally known as The Northwest Mounted Rifles when founded in 1873, the organization's name underwent several changes over the years. The United States expressed concerns about having an armed military presence along the borders, prompting the name to be altered to The North-West Mounted Police (NWMP). It wasn't until 1904 that King Edward VII granted them the "Royal" designation, leading to their official renaming as the Royal Northwest Mounted Police (RNWMP). By 1920, the RNWMP transformed into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
The coin's design prominently features a Mountie officer clad in the original uniform. Over the decades, the RCMP grew in size, boasting a membership of 18,000 members by the late 1980s.
