The Silver Britannia Coin is a bullion silver coin containing one troy ounce of Silver with a face value of £2, being first issued in 1997 by the Royal Mint, though the Gold Britannia was first issued in 1987.
The reverse features Britannia, the female personification of the island of Great Britain used since ancient Rome. Britannia first appeared on a coin in first century Rome, but was not included on British coinage until 1672.
The reverse image is of Britannia in her Roman-style helmet, holding Poseidon's trident in one hand and an olive branch and shield in the other. The shield is decorated in the same style as the British flag. Britannia’s dress and hair swirl in the wind as she looks out to sea, watchful against threats. The rim reads 1 oz 999 FINE SILVER, BRITANNIA 2014. The obverse depicts Queen Elizabeth’s dignified portrait. The words ELIZABETH II DG REG FID DEF and 2 POUNDS are written around the rim.
The Britannia is 38.6 mm in diameter with a reeded edge.
Britannia first showed up on a coin as far back as 119 AD when the Roman Emperor Hadrian placed her on one. She’s looking better than ever as evidenced by this 2014 1 oz Britannia coin, a highly collectible item that is proving to be popular with both collectors and investors.
Customers will note the exceptional design artistry of each coin stamped with its purity and one troy ounce of Silver. This design is quite detailed and denotes the British Royal Mint’s continued product excellence and superior minting. The obverse side of each coin features an elegant profile of Queen Elizabeth II along with inscriptions for her title, the coins face value, and the year.
